Drug uses
Effexor is an antidepressant prescribed to treat anxiety disorders the signs of which are irritation, fear of different strange people, social situations, sleep disorder, tiredness, tense muscles and chronic depression characterized by everyday tiredness, changes of appetite, feeling of guilt, decreased sexual function, problems with concentration, feeling of uselessness, slow thinking.
Effexor got a unique structure that distinguishes it from both MAO inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants. It belongs to the group of selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRI) and acts for 4-11 hrs. Effexor is an extremely effective medicine suitable fir most people suffering from the conditions mentioned above. For the ones other antidepressants do not work, this medicine proved to relieve the symptoms of depression, anxiety, etc.
How taken
Effexor comes as extended-release capsules or tablets taken orally. When using the medicine, strictly follow your doctor’s directions.
Effexor is taken with food 2-3 times a day, as for Effexor XR ,only once a day may be enough but a capsule should be swallowed as whole, not crushed or chewed, with water at approximately the same time daily. If any swallowing problems occur, you may open the capsule, mix its contents with some applesauce on a spoon and take it with water.
The doses your doctor prescribes you may vary depending on your state and reaction; he/she may add up to 75 mg each time.
For Effexor the average dose:
75-375 mg a day divided into 2-3 doses.
Effexor XR:
37.5/75-225 mg a day
Precautions
1 Tell the doctor if you have any allergies especially the ones to the medication. Do not take Effexor any more if any allergic reaction occurs.
2 Never exceed the doses prescribed by your doctor.
3 Do not perform any dangerous tasks until you know how your body reacts to the medicine.
4 Tell the doctor about any medicines you are taking, planning to take or have been recently taking. Be sure you mentioned any vitamins, supplements as well as
MAO inhibitors (at least a fortnight is needed between the courses of treatment)

5 Do not stop using the medicine suddenly as this may aggravate side effects. Better consult with your doctor who will help you to do it gradually.
6 The doctor should know if you are under 18 y.o.
7 Children and teenagers taking Effexor are more subject to having suicidal thoughts.
8 It may take some time before the medicine actually starts working (6 to 8 weeks).
9 Inform the doctor if you are planning to have a baby or you are pregnant already. Effexor passes into breast milk, that’s why it shouldn’t be used when breast-feeding.
10 Do not take alcohol drinks during the treatment.
11 Make sure the doctor know about any specific conditions that you have or ever had, such as:
Drug addiction
Mania
Depression
Dehydration
Overactive thyroid
Convulsions
Glaucoma
Kidney/blood pressure/brain/liver/heart problems
Bipolar disorder
12 Make sure the specialists know about the medicine you are taking before having any kind of surgery.
Side effects
If any side effects occur, consult with your doctor immediately. The most common are:
Effexor:
Sweating, irritability, giddiness, changes in vision, sickness, vomiting, tremor, anxiety, sexual function problems, constipation, weakness, loss of weight.
Effexor XR:
Giddiness, dry mouth, loss of weight, sleep disorder, constipation, sweating, ejaculation problems, weakness.
The medicine may also cause panic, sleepiness, hyperactivity, heartbeat irregularities, mania, excitement, rash, high blood pressure, hives, fluid retention, bruising, suicidal thoughts and conduct, hostility, anxiety, bleeding, serotonin syndrome.
For the ones taking large doses of the medicine, it may increase the level of cholesterol in the body.
Missed dose
Do not make up for a missed dose of Effexor XR, just follow your everyday schedule. If it’s Effexor, take it as soon as you remember, but if it’s time for another dose, skip it and go back to the schedule.
Overdose
Overdose of Effexor may lead to fatal end as well as its combination with alcohol and medications. Prompt medical help is needed if there occur the following symptoms: low blood pressure, pain in the muscles, heartbeat irregularities, drowsiness, giddiness, convulsions, coma.
